Another Grant County, Indiana town heavily influenced by the natural Gas Boom! Don't miss the Matthews Covered Bridge when you visit! ... See MoreSee Less

Day 54: Matthews Matthews became a community in 1895 and was named in honor of Indiana’s then governor Claude Matthews (D) - governor from 1891 to 1893. Matthews (the governor) was the owner of the Matthews Land Company, which speculated on the land in the area and developed the town during the Indiana Gas Boom. The community originally began as New Cumberland, which dated from 1833. The first post-office in the area was also named New Cumberland. In time, Matthews grew as a separate community and later absorbed the old village of New Cumberland. A legend, probably apocryphal, states that Matthews was considered as a capital of Indiana - either very early on when state officials were considering Indianapolis (from Corydon), or were later falsely promised during the Gas Boom. We cannot find any published information that states as such, so we consider the story a legend. Claude Matthews was governor during a time when the Republican and Democratic party in Indiana were hotly antagonistic with each other. After leaving office, the former governor Matthews became and early contender for president in the 1896 Democratic National Convention. The town of Matthews hosts a covered bridge festival every September - we encourage you to go: www.matthewscoveredbridgefestival.com/ County: Grant | Population: 596| Settlement Hierarchy: Village
