The 181-foot covered timbered bridge, built in 1877 and restored in 1999, spans the Mississinewa River at Matthews and is the last remaining covered bridge in Grant County. It was swept from its abutments by the great 1913 flood, and floated a quarter mile downstream. It was later returned to its abutments by horses. The bridge is the site of an annual festival on the weekend after Labor Day. Scenic, serene setting for picnics or daydreams.
Visit this family operated vineyard and winery tasting room. The tasting room has been lovingly designed inside our historic barn. Our first series of wine includes Indiana Apple Wine, Indiana Pear Wine, Indiana Noiret, Indiana Traminette, American Concord, American Riesling, American Niagra, Michigan Chardonnay, California Cabernet Sauvignon, and a California Merlot. This 1500 seat auditorium hosts an annual series of national performers as well as local events.
A historic landmark, the Museum was founded in 1975. Exhibits showcase authentic artifacts of hometown film star James Dean, Garfield cartoon creator Jim Davis, community history, and much more. The gift shop includes James Dean items, Garfield items, and Fairmount items. The Museum sponsors the annual James Dean Festival and James Dean Run Car Show during the last full weekend in September. Guided tours up to 50. Museum requests advance notice for large groups. Handicap accessible. Open May-November on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 11am-5pm. Located in the heart of Matter Park along the Mississinewa River, the Gardens of Matter Park are 6.3 acres of aesthetic beauty. The gardens have become a regional Hoosier garden showcase, which utilize Proven Winners plants, and have earned the prestigious designation as a Proven Winners Signature Garden. Beautiful water features, gardens, and garden structures grace the area. A butterfly garden and a children’s garden provide learning tools for the next generation. The gardens are the site of memories in the making, hosting weddings, reunions, graduations, concerts in the park, and other wonderful community events.
The Gas City museum displays a wide range of artifacts from Gas City’s past. The displays include artifacts from Gas City Hall, the Avalon Hotel, the Arcade Theater, the natural Gas Boom, glass factories, railroad, and local artists. Fairmount Indiana is the hometown of Jim Davis, creator of the comic strip Garfield. And Jim Davis’ and Garfield’s presence continue to be felt throughout east central Indiana with Grant County’s Garfield Trail. Visit twelve unique statues of America’s favorite lasagna-loving fat cat, Garfield. Located in Marion, Indiana and surrounding Grant County cities, the statues each measure approximately five feet in height and depict Jim Davis’s Garfield in fun costumes or situations.
