The Quilters Hall of Fame was founded in by Hazel Carter in Vienna, Virginia in 1979. Hazel, a self proclaimed quilting addict, felt that the nation was ignoring the significance of our quilting heritage. To amend the situation she established the Quilters Hall of Fame to honor not only quilters, but authors, curators, historians and researchers who contributed to the art. From 1979 to 1990 twenty one individuals were inducted.
In 1991 the Quilters Hall of Fame changed directions. That year Marie Webster, an early 20th century quilt designer was inducted. Accepting the post humus award was Webster’s Granddaughter, Rosalind Perry. Perry, from California, had recently visited the previous residence of her Grandmother in Marion, Indiana . She found the 1902 circa home in disrepair and desperately wanted to restore it. She offered the Quilters Hall of Fame a permanent home in the Marie Webster House in Marion, Indiana, and the adventure began.
In Marion, quilt enthusiasts and preservationists welcomed the Quilters Hall of Fame. Locals formed “The Friends of the Quilters Hall of Fame” and partnered with quilters across the nation to refurbish the house. It took thirteen years to complete the project. All the while annual induction ceremonies continued to increase the ranks of the Quilters Hall of Fame. In July 2004 the Marie Webster House was officially opened as the Quilters Hall of Fame. A permanent exhibit honoring the inductees is on display in the home. The Marie Webster room tells the story of the former mistress of the house, and traveling exhibits rotate throughout the year. The Friends of the Quilters Hall of Fame maintain the home and operated a gift shop with locally made crafts and novelties.
The Annual Quilt Celebration has been held in Marion Indiana since 1992. New members are inducted to the Hall of Fame during the event each July. The Celebration also features exhibits, workshops and seminars.
