Hostess House

The Hostess House is an Elegant Georgian Revival Mansion built by J Wood Wilson for his young bride, Peggy, in 1912.  Widowed in 1916, the flamboyant Mrs. Wilson traveled abroad and enjoyed the arts. .A second wedding to Dr. Vaughn in 1923 brought a new era of romance to the home.

The Home was designed and built by noted African American Architect, Samuel Plato. Plato operated a contracting firm in Marion, Indiana from 1902 to 1921.  He built several landmark structures before leaving the area.  During his career Plato built several post offices and was awarded contracts for several U.S defense projects

Today the Hostess House is a tea room serving lunch from 11am to 2 pm.  Peggy’s A gift shop is on the second floor. The third floor ballroom is used for exhibits and group functions.  A costumed interpreter is available with reservations to reveal the colorful history of the home and its inhabitants.
