Garfield in Grant County

GARFIELD’S AT HOME IN GRANT COUNTY!

Thanks to the dreams and the efforts of Pete Beck, a special Garfield project has come to life in Grant County.  Garfield creator Jim Davis was born in Marion and grew up in Fairmount.  Davis’ former coach, Pete Beck, had a vision - a Garfield trail throughout Grant County, featuring a statue of the furry feline in each community.  Beck wanted to find a unique way to celebrate local unity and pride, and dreamed about the project for at least a year before he even began to work on it.

A series of 10 statues are planned area wide, each statue having a different theme selected by the community.  Van Buren’s was the first statue dedicated, featuring Garfield in a basketball uniform, standing on a pile of books, with a globe in one hand and a sack of popcorn in the other.  Fairmount’s Garfield was the second statue dedicated, and features the famous orange cat in denim, and a red James Dean rebel jacket.  Sweetser’s Garfield is headed off to college, waving goodbye with his suitcase in hand.  Swayzee’s Garfield celebrates the Swayzee Speed Kings, and Matthews has a fishing Garfield close to the Cumberland Covered Bridge. To follow the Garfield Trail in Grant County simply click here.
