Christmas City, USA

Ever since an Indianapolis television station visited Marion in 1965 to film its elaborate holiday decorations for a Christmas special, Marion has been known as Christmas City, USA.  The community celebrates Christms in a big way, and the Christmas City Walkway of Lights is the centerpiece of the annual festivities.    Our dazzling holiday light display spans nearly four continuous miles and features more than 2.5 million lights!  Over 125 individual displays run side by side.  displays include a 95 foot animated sea dragon, a 60 foot riverboat, and a lighted suspension bridge that stretches 227 feet across the Mississinewa River.  Inspirational displays include a life size nativity scene and an angel choir.  Animation brings displays to life - a playful penguin enjoys his slippery ride down the icy slope of a 14 foot igloo, and an elf takes a break from holiday chores to make a snowball that rolls down the hillside until it is larger than he is, and completely engulfs him!  From the Saturday before Thanksgiving each year until December 31, the exhibit is illuminated nightly from 6pm-10pm.  Stroll along Marion's Riverwalk and enjoy the lights, or be like the majority of visitors and enjoy the display from the comfort of your own car.  Each year more than 50,000 vehicles carry nearly 200,000 passengers along the route.  So load up your car and bring your family to Marion to celebrate the holidays in a very special way!
